Over a dozen swans were found dead and dying following a herbicide application near a community lake. Herbicides applied included Lifeline, a glufosinate-based product marketed by Bayer as a "safe" replacement for RoundUp/glyphosate.
Warning, the videos in this post are heartbreaking.
This herbicide application was part of a "total grass kill" performed as part of a "cash for grass" program run by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. This highlights the unintended consequences that can occur even when pesticide applicators "follow the label". Pesticides are designed to kill and must always be used with caution and restraint. The landscape contractors responsible for this incident are now working with the California Department of Fish & Game.
